Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has confirmed that Bruno Fernandes will retain the club's captaincy, insisting that the Portuguese midfielder remains committed to improving the team's performances despite recent tensions.
Fernandes was left on the bench for United's 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday after reportedly questioning Carrick's tactics following a 4-1 Champions League loss to Como.
However, the pair held discussions at the club's Carrington training ground on Tuesday in an effort to resolve their differences ahead of United's Premier League trip to Chelsea.
Carrick Backs Fernandes' Leadership
Speaking ahead of Saturday's match, Carrick dismissed suggestions that Fernandes could lose the captaincy, describing him as an important figure in the squad.
The United boss said Fernandes remained fully committed to the club and determined to help improve its fortunes.
Carrick also explained that his decision to leave the midfielder out of the starting line-up against Bournemouth was based on what he believed was best for that particular game.
He praised Fernandes' leadership, noting that the midfielder had led the team through numerous matches over the years and would continue to do so.
Carrick Focuses on Ending Poor Run
Meanwhile, Carrick is under pressure following a disappointing run of results. United have gone eight games without a win, their worst sequence since the 2015-16 season, according to the report.
The team could match a run of nine consecutive winless matches not seen since the 1988-89 campaign if results do not improve.
Despite uncertainty surrounding his position, Carrick said he did not need assurances from the club's hierarchy, stressing that he understood the responsibilities attached to his role.
He added that his priority was to improve the team's performances and help United return to winning ways.
United will face Chelsea on Saturday as Carrick seeks to end the club's winless run, with Fernandes set to retain the captain's armband.
