Nigerian singer Oluwatosin Ajibade, popularly known as Mr Eazi, has claimed that he played a major role in revitalising Afrobeats in 2016 and contributing to the genre’s eventual global acceptance.
Speaking in a recent interview with 3Music TV, the singer said he singlehandedly “saved” Afrobeats in 2016, arguing that his entry into the music scene brought a fresh sound to the genre.
Mr Eazi Reflects on His Breakthrough
Mr Eazi, known for songs such as Skin Tight, gained prominence in 2016 with his distinctive laid-back vocal delivery and fusion of musical styles.
His rise earned him the Next Rated award at the 2016 Headies, marking a significant milestone in his career.
The singer believes his contribution helped bring renewed energy to Afrobeats during a period when the genre was gaining increasing attention across Africa and among international audiences.
Other Artists Also Made Their Mark
However, Mr Eazi was not the only artist making waves in Afrobeats in 2016. Other musicians, including Tekno, Runtown and Ycee, also enjoyed successful runs with hit songs that gained popularity across Africa and among audiences abroad.
Mr Eazi’s statement highlights his view of his influence on the genre during a pivotal period in its development, although Afrobeats’ growth has involved contributions from numerous artists over several years.
