Majid Michel Says Comparing Ghana’s Film Industry With Nollywood Is Unfair

Veteran Ghanaian actor Majid Michel has described comparisons between Ghana’s film industry and Nigeria’s Nollywood as unfair, citing the significant difference in the two countries’ populations.

Speaking in a recent interview with Y1079 FM Accra, Michel argued that Nigeria’s much larger population gives it a greater pool of potential actors, filmmakers and other professionals in the movie industry.

Michel Cites Population Difference

The actor described comparisons between the two industries as “stupid,” arguing that it was unreasonable to expect Ghana, with a much smaller population, to match Nigeria’s output.

Using an analogy involving two groups of children, Michel explained that a larger population naturally increases the likelihood of producing more professionals across different fields, including filmmaking.

He noted that Ghana has fewer than 40 million people, while Nigeria’s population exceeds 200 million, making the difference in the size of their potential talent pools substantial.

Actor Calls for a Fairer Comparison

Michel also argued that Ghana should be cautious about comparing itself with more established countries in areas such as leadership and institutional development.

He said some countries have spent centuries building their systems, while Ghana still has considerable ground to cover.

According to the actor, the differences in population size and institutional development should be considered when assessing Ghana’s film industry against Nollywood.
