Trump Praises Democrats After Republican Defeat in US Midterm Elections

US President Donald Trump has praised the Democratic Party following its victory over Republicans in the midterm elections, while insisting that his party's defeat was not his fault.

Speaking to Fox News on Tuesday, Trump acknowledged the Democrats' campaign efforts, saying they had performed well despite his party's losses in the elections.

“I think the Democrats did a good job. I really do. I think they did a good job. They fought hard,” he said, adding that there was a “mood in the air”.

Trump Blames Republican Candidates for Election Losses

Although Trump said he would accept the election results, he maintained that Republicans would have secured a landslide victory if he had been on the ballot.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, he wrote: “I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!”

He later told The New York Times that he was willing to accept the outcome and work with Democrats.

“I am absolutely willing to accept those results. We’ll work with the Democrats, and we’ll, you know, look forward to working with them. We’ll probably work something out,” he said.

However, Trump subsequently posted a picture of his red MAGA baseball cap with the word “VETO”, signalling his intention to oppose some Democratic legislative efforts.

White House Questions Republican Candidates

A White House official described the administration's mood as defiant and questioned the quality of Republican candidates who contested the elections.

The official said Trump had done more to promote some candidates than they had done to promote themselves.

Trump also indicated that he would publicly analyse the reasons behind the party's defeat, beginning with criticism of Texas Governor Greg Abbott, whom he accused of losing support among Republican voters.

Iran Conflict Also Linked to Republican Defeat

Trump acknowledged that the Iran conflict may have contributed to the Republican Party's poor performance, although he maintained that voters also understood the importance of his actions concerning the country.

“I think a part of it was Iran, but at the same time, people understood the importance of what I’ve done with Iran,” he told Fox News.

The election results leave Trump facing a Congress controlled by Democrats in both chambers for the remaining two years of his second term, potentially creating challenges for his legislative agenda.
