Canadian soldiers serving in eastern Latvia are intensifying combat training as a Canadian-led NATO brigade moves closer to the Russian and Belarusian borders amid heightened tensions in Eastern Europe.

The deployment marks the first time the entire brigade has mobilised to Latvia's eastern border, with approximately 2,000 Canadian troops among the forces involved.

During a training exercise inside an abandoned Soviet-era school, Canadian and Italian soldiers practised close-quarter battle techniques, moving through several floors of the damaged building in a simulated combat operation.

The exercise was designed to prepare troops for the dangers of clearing buildings during actual military missions.

A Canadian master corporal told CTV News that such operations could involve significant casualties and medical evacuations, making realistic training essential for soldiers operating in combat environments.

Canadian troops have led NATO's multinational mission in Latvia for nearly a decade, working alongside forces from other alliance members.

NATO Strengthens Presence Near Russia

The brigade's movement comes as NATO maintains a stronger presence along its eastern flank, which includes Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania.

CTV News reported from the area around Daugavpils, a Latvian city located approximately 50 kilometres from Russia and 30 kilometres from Belarus.

The region presents a complex operating environment for NATO troops. Nearly half of Daugavpils' population is ethnically Russian, and Canadian soldiers have encountered mixed reactions from residents.

A Canadian Armed Forces lieutenant said some locals had welcomed the troops, while others had shouted insults at them.

Drone Activity Adds to Security Concerns

Canadian personnel operating in eastern Latvia are also monitoring drone activity and possible incursions around NATO training areas.

The lieutenant said some drones appeared to be civilian devices, while others could have military purposes. He described instances of drones flying overhead, sometimes at low altitudes, as they appeared to observe troop movements.

With the brigade now operating closer to NATO's eastern borders, the deployment is also intended to demonstrate the alliance's military readiness and deter potential threats from the east.
