Russian Drone Strike on Ukraine Railway Station Kills 14, Injures Others

At least 14 people have been killed and 14 others injured after a Russian jet-powered drone struck a crowded railway platform in Dnipro, central Ukraine, according to local officials.

The attack occurred while a passenger train bound for Zaporizhzhia was at the station, Ukraine's state railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, said. An 11-year-old boy was among those wounded.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack, saying the drone struck a platform where commuter and passenger trains were standing. He called on the United States, European countries and the G7 to impose further sanctions on Russia.

Dnipro officials said an elevated threat level had been announced before the strike, but many people remained on the platform. Russia's military had not publicly commented on the incident, while Moscow has repeatedly denied deliberately targeting civilians.

Deadly Attacks Reported in Other Ukrainian Cities

The railway station strike was among several deadly attacks reported across Ukraine.

In Chernihiv, northern Ukraine, two 15-year-old girls were killed in a Russian missile strike on the city centre. At least 25 people, including four children, were injured, according to regional head Vyacheslav Chaus.

In Kremenchuk, three people were killed and 28 others injured after a Russian drone attack hit residential buildings and a school, regional head Vitaliy Diakivnych said.

Authorities declared a day of mourning for Dnipro and Chernihiv on Friday.

Attacks on Ukraine's Railway Network Increase

The latest strikes came amid efforts to maintain a fragile ceasefire in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky, where residents have reportedly endured shortages of food, water, medicine and electricity. Ukraine's human rights ombudsman said the truce was holding into its third day.

Ukraine's railway operator reported a sharp rise in attacks on railway infrastructure since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. Of 521 locomotives hit during the war, nearly 60 per cent were reportedly struck this year.

Attacks on railway facilities have also increased, rising from 1,206 in 2025 to 1,700 so far in 2026, according to figures supplied by Ukrzaliznytsia to AFP.

Meanwhile, Russia condemned Ukrainian drone attacks on Moscow during the Russia-Africa Summit, which brought together African leaders and government delegations from 48 countries.
