The Nigeria Debate Consortium has scheduled the Lagos State governorship debate for Sunday, November 8, 2026, as political parties prepare for the 2027 general elections.
The debate, which will be the first in a series planned for selected battleground states, is expected to bring together governorship candidates from different political parties to present their policy proposals and respond to questions on issues affecting residents.
According to a statement made available to PUNCH Online on Sunday, the event will hold at 7 p.m. at The Hub by IALA, House of His Glory, Plot 18, Providence Road, Marwa, Lekki, Lagos.
Key Issues to Shape the Debate
The candidates are expected to address major concerns affecting Lagos, including transportation, infrastructure, security, housing, education, healthcare, job creation and economic growth.
The consortium said the debate would provide voters with an opportunity to examine candidates' ideas, priorities and preparedness to govern, beyond campaign promises.
It also stated that all participating candidates would be treated fairly, with equal speaking time, consistent rules and the same moderation standards. Experienced journalists will moderate the event in line with principles of neutrality, fairness and editorial independence.
Five Media Organisations Behind the Initiative
The Nigeria Debate Consortium is a collaboration involving Channels Television, TVC News, PUNCH Newspaper, TheCable and Vanguard Newspaper.
The group said the initiative was established to promote democratic participation, electoral accountability and informed public discussion through credible, non-partisan debates.
The debate series will begin with Lagos and conclude with a presidential debate or town hall. The events will be broadcast to national and digital audiences through the participating media organisations' platforms.
Lagos Governorship Candidates Outline Their Plans
Some candidates have already made public proposals on issues expected to feature during the debate.
The APC governorship candidate, Obafemi Hamzat, has discussed plans to strengthen infrastructure, improve security, address flooding and housing challenges, and improve waste management.
The African Democratic Congress candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has promised affordable housing and measures to address alleged intimidation by security operatives and political thugs.
Meanwhile, Nigeria Democratic Congress candidate Funso Doherty has pledged to make education and healthcare accessible at no cost within his first 100 days in office if elected.
The consortium has encouraged Lagos residents, particularly eligible voters, young people, civil society organisations, professional groups and the business community, to follow the debate and engage with the candidates' proposals.
