IGP Proposes 200% Gratuity for Retired Police Officers

IGP Proposes 200% Gratuity for Retired Police Officers
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has proposed a 200 per cent gratuity for retired police officers as part of efforts to address longstanding pension challenges in the Nigeria Police Force. The proposal is before a presidential committee tasked with examining police pension concerns and recommending sustainable reforms.

Proposed Pension Reforms

The proposed package could allow eligible officers to retire with pension benefits linked to their last salaries, alongside the enhanced gratuity. It is also expected to address protests by serving officers demanding withdrawal from the Contributory Pension Scheme and improve the administration of retirement benefits. The committee includes representatives from the Ministry of Finance, the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, the Budget Office of the Federation and the National Pension Commission.

Existing Pensioners May Benefit

The proposed reforms also seek to cover officers who retired before any new framework takes effect, with provisions to review their benefits under revised terms. The Federal Government has reportedly cleared outstanding pension payment backlogs and introduced pension increases for some beneficiaries. Disu's engagement with the Presidency and relevant institutions is expected to continue addressing funding gaps, outstanding liabilities and delays in benefit administration. However, the proposed 200 per cent gratuity has **not yet been approved**. Its implementation will depend on the committee's recommendations, government approval, funding arrangements and final guidelines.
