Venezuelan Opposition Leader María Corina Machado Returns Home After Months in Exile
Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has returned to the country after more than 10 months in exile, arriving amid continued political uncertainty following the removal of former president Nicolás Maduro. Machado announced her return in a post on X on Sunday, writing, “I am here. With you.” She attended Mass in the state of Lara before travelling to the capital, Caracas, in a convoy of supporters who gathered along the route to welcome her.

Return Raises Questions About Venezuela’s Future

Machado’s return follows several unsuccessful attempts to re-enter Venezuela, according to her advisers. She had left the country to accept the Nobel Peace Prize in Norway after spending her final days in Venezuela in hiding. Her ally, former presidential candidate Edmundo González, confirmed her arrival and described it as an important moment for the country’s opposition. Machado has previously said she would seek the presidency again if another election were held. However, her immediate plans following her return remain unclear.

Background to the Political Crisis

Machado won Venezuela’s opposition primary in 2023 but was barred by the government of Maduro from contesting the 2024 presidential election. González subsequently ran against Maduro on the opposition’s behalf. The government-aligned electoral authority declared Maduro the winner, while the opposition disputed the result and published voting records it said showed González had won. In January, US forces seized Maduro, who is now being held in New York and faces drug, weapons and torture charges. He has pleaded not guilty. Maduro’s former deputy, Delcy Rodríguez, was sworn in as interim president and later signed an oil agreement with the United States.

US President Donald Trump said he was unaware of Machado’s return but expressed hope that she was safe. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, meanwhile, attributed the conditions enabling her return to US-supported reconciliation talks. He said the talks had also facilitated the release of political prisoners and the return of opposition figures from exile. A spokesperson for Machado described her return as a step towards a democratic transition and called for free, fair and verifiable presidential elections.
