US Embassy Accuses Canada of Election Meddling Ahead of Midterm Polls

The United States Embassy in Ottawa has accused Canadian officials of attempting to influence American politics ahead of the November midterm elections, escalating tensions between the neighbouring countries over trade and diplomatic relations.

In a fact sheet released on Wednesday, the embassy alleged that Canadian ministers and provincial premiers had openly discussed plans to influence American politics through official documents and public statements. Canadian leaders, including Prime Minister Mark Carney, have rejected the allegations.

US Embassy Cites Tariff Disputes

The embassy pointed to meetings between Canadian officials and US Democrats, as well as discussions about retaliatory tariffs against American imports, as examples of what it described as potential interference.

It cited Industry Minister Mélanie Joly’s comments about meeting US governors and potential presidential candidates when asked about the possibility of Democrats winning the midterm elections.

The fact sheet also referenced Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s reported suggestion that Canada consider additional tariffs targeting politically significant US states.

Carney and Ford Reject Allegations

Carney said Canada’s trade measures were a response to actions initiated by the United States and were intended to protect Canadian jobs, businesses and the economy.

Speaking at an announcement of nearly C$9bn in aid to address the impact of US tariffs, the prime minister said his government’s actions were in the interests of Canadian workers and families.

Ford also denied any intention to interfere in American elections, saying his focus was on Ontario and Canada. He added that the American people would decide the outcome of the midterms.

Joly has similarly denied that Canada is interfering in US elections, explaining that her visits to the United States were aimed at attracting investment from American companies.

Trade Tensions Strain Relations

The dispute comes amid months of disagreements between Washington and Ottawa over tariffs and countermeasures introduced by both countries.

US Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra had previously warned that American officials were closely monitoring Canadian politicians for possible signs of election interference.

Meanwhile, a petition calling for Hoekstra’s removal, accusing him of undermining Canada-US diplomatic relations, had attracted more than 280,000 signatures, according to the report.

The November midterm elections will determine which party controls the two chambers of the US Congress, potentially shaping the remainder of President Donald Trump’s term.
