Ukraine continues to face uncertainty over its relationship with the United States as tensions between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky raise questions about the future of American support for Kyiv.
Although European countries have increased their assistance and Ukraine has expanded its own defence production, the country still depends on several American capabilities that are difficult to replace quickly.
Military Support Remains Critical
American-made air defence systems, intelligence and satellite communications remain important to Ukraine's ability to defend itself against Russian attacks. Any interruption to these capabilities could affect battlefield operations and the protection of civilians.
Ukraine has also raised concerns about delays in receiving some previously agreed defensive equipment, including interceptors used by Patriot air defence systems.
Europe Takes on a Greater Role
European governments have increased their financial and military contributions since the United States reduced new aid packages. European countries are also purchasing American-made weapons for transfer to Ukraine, although some transfers depend on US authorisation.
Ukraine has meanwhile worked to strengthen its domestic defence industry. However, developing alternatives to specialised American systems and technology could take considerable time and investment.
A Difficult Diplomatic Balance
The strained relationship between Washington and Kyiv has created uncertainty as Ukraine continues to defend itself against Russia's invasion. Trump has pushed for an end to the war, while Zelensky has stressed the need for security guarantees and continued support.
Ukraine's ability to sustain its defence will depend not only on its own military production but also on the reliability of its partnerships with the United States and European allies.
