UK Medic Tests Positive for Ebola in DR Congo, Flown to London for Treatment

A British medical worker who tested positive for Ebola while working on the outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) has been flown to London for specialist treatment.

The UK government confirmed on Thursday that the unnamed British citizen had returned to the country after testing positive for the disease.

The medic is receiving treatment at the Royal Free Hospital in London, which has a high-level isolation unit specifically designed to manage infectious diseases.

UK Government Says Public Risk Remains Low

According to the government, the hospital has strict safety protocols in place to prevent contact between the patient and members of the general public.

Renu Bindra, Deputy Director of the All Hazards Public Health Response Team at the UK Health Security Agency, said the risk to the wider public remained low.

Ebola Outbreak Claims Thousands of Lives

Africa’s latest Ebola outbreak has reportedly killed more than 5,300 people, with the vast majority of deaths recorded in the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to the continent’s leading health agency.

The development comes weeks after Nigeria reported an Ebola case involving a 42-year-old Swiss woman whose husband works at the country’s embassy. She was subsequently flown to Geneva, Switzerland, for treatment.
