US President Donald Trump has said Ukraine needs a new president after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticised a reported US-Russia agreement to ease sanctions on Russian diesel exports.
Trump accused Zelensky of creating problems by continuing attacks on Russian oil refineries and suggested Ukraine needed a leader willing to reach a deal. Ukraine has been under martial law since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, meaning elections have been suspended.
Zelensky argued that easing restrictions on Russian diesel exports would provide Moscow with additional revenue to sustain its war. He also warned that the agreement could encourage further attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
The reported deal has attracted criticism from European officials, including EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas, who argued that easing sanctions could strengthen Russia’s ability to finance the conflict. The disagreement comes as the war and disruptions to global energy supplies continue to put pressure on fuel prices.
