Sudan’s Army Chief Writes to Trump on Truce and Peace Efforts

Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has written to US President Donald Trump, reiterating his commitment to ending the war that has devastated Sudan since fighting erupted in April 2023.

The United States is involved in a diplomatic initiative known as the Quad, alongside Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt, aimed at bringing the conflict to an end. Washington has proposed a 90-day truce, but Sudan’s army has opposed the proposal.

Tensions between Washington and Burhan’s leadership have also surfaced in recent months. The United States refused to grant Burhan a visa to attend the United Nations General Assembly in September, a decision viewed as linked to his reservations about the ceasefire plan.

Earlier in October, Trump’s senior adviser for Arab and African affairs, Massad Boulos, met with Burhan through Egyptian mediation as diplomatic efforts continued.

The war began as a power struggle between Sudan’s military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, developing into a devastating conflict that has displaced civilians and deepened the country’s humanitarian crisis. Whether the latest communication will help bridge disagreements over a truce remains to be seen.
