Tributes have poured in for legendary British actor Sir Patrick Stewart following his death at the age of 86, with longtime friend and co-star Sir Ian McKellen describing him as "the most respected and beloved actor of his generation".

Stewart died at his Los Angeles home on Wednesday, surrounded by his wife, Sunny Ozell, after what his family described as "a brief and poignant journey" with Alzheimer's disease and Lewy Body Dementia. His death was announced on Thursday.

McKellen, who starred alongside Stewart in the X-Men film franchise, praised his honesty, warmth and loyalty, saying he was a man to admire and rely on. He also recalled their early days together at the Royal Shakespeare Company and Stewart's decision to take on the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek.

William Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk in Star Trek, said Stewart brought intelligence, grace and humanity to his roles. He described Captain Picard as a character who represented the best of humanity.

Hugh Jackman, another X-Men co-star, called Stewart a tremendous friend and man, while George Takei said his work inspired a generation to imagine a brighter future.

A Career Across Theatre and Hollywood

Stewart became internationally recognised for playing Captain Picard in more than 170 episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation between 1987 and 1994. He also appeared in four feature films and later returned to the character in Star Trek: Picard.

He was equally celebrated for portraying Professor Charles Xavier, popularly known as Professor X, in the X-Men franchise. Beyond Hollywood, he built a distinguished career in classical theatre, joining the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966 and performing in productions including King John, A Midsummer Night's Dream and Henry IV.

Knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2010, Stewart remained proud of his Yorkshire roots. He also served as chancellor of the University of Huddersfield, an achievement McKellen described as one of his proudest.

Beyond Acting: His Advocacy and Legacy

Stewart was also known for his campaign against domestic violence. Having witnessed abuse against his mother during childhood, he became an ambassador for the domestic abuse charity Refuge in 2007 and used his public profile to raise awareness of the issue.

Theatres across London's West End will dim their lights for two minutes on November 3 in his honour. The Royal Shakespeare Company remembered him as one of the finest classical Shakespearean actors of his generation.

Stewart is survived by his wife, Sunny Ozell, and his two adult children, Daniel and Sophie, from his first marriage. His final film appearance as Professor X is expected to be in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.

His death marks the loss of an actor whose work connected generations of theatre audiences and film lovers around the world.
