Protests Erupt in New York After ICE Officer Shoots Dominican Man

Hundreds of protesters gathered in New York on Friday following the shooting of a 28-year-old Dominican man, Oscar Bergal, by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in the Bronx.

Bergal was wounded in the neck during an immigration operation on Thursday. A five-year-old child who was in his vehicle was reportedly unharmed.

The incident sparked a dispute between New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the Trump administration. Mamdani criticised the shooting and called for the abolition of ICE, while Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin accused the mayor of making comments that could encourage hostility towards immigration officers.

Protesters marched through Manhattan chanting slogans opposing ICE and expressing support for immigrants. Mamdani also said he intended to speak with President Donald Trump and seek the withdrawal of immigration agents from the city.

Federal officials claimed Bergal attempted to evade arrest and drove his vehicle towards officers, prompting them to open fire. The incident adds to growing scrutiny of ICE operations following other shootings involving federal immigration agents in the United States.
