A private jet operated by Triton Aviation made an emergency landing at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja after reportedly losing a door shortly after take-off on Thursday.
The CL60 aircraft, registered as T7-SEI, was heading to Lagos when the incident occurred at about 4:20 p.m. The crew declared a Mayday emergency after reporting that a door had opened during the flight, prompting air traffic controllers to direct the aircraft back to Abuja.
Airport fire and rescue personnel, emergency teams and medical staff were placed on standby as the aircraft returned. It landed safely on the same runway at approximately 4:34 p.m. UTC, around 14 minutes after the distress call.
After landing, the missing door was confirmed to be absent from the aircraft's fuselage. A video shared with PUNCH reportedly showed the door recovered by farmers from a farm in the Abuja area. The number of passengers on board was not immediately confirmed.
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau was expected to investigate the incident. The development has raised fresh questions about aviation safety, while officials work to establish exactly how the door became detached during flight.
