Pope Leo XIV has been discharged from hospital and returned to the Vatican, five days after undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous tumour from his right lung.
The 71-year-old pontiff left Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Saturday to cheers and applause from well-wishers. His doctors, Luigi Carbone and Stefano Margaritora, said blood tests, a chest X-ray and an assessment of his clinical condition indicated that he was fit to leave the hospital.
During his stay, the pope continued to celebrate Mass and resumed some official duties. He also spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, urging a ceasefire in the Ukrainian city of Oleshky.
However, questions remain about his planned November visit to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru. The Vatican has said the pope has cancelled his audiences until October 20, while his doctors continue monitoring his recovery.
