Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has pledged to pursue port development across the Niger Delta, including the establishment of a new port in Bayelsa State, if elected president.
Obi made the pledge during a visit to Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, where he attended the homecoming ceremony of Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, the party's national leader.
Obi Criticises Tinubu's Engagement With Bayelsa
Addressing supporters and stakeholders, Obi criticised President Bola Tinubu over his alleged lack of overnight visits to Bayelsa State since assuming office, contrasting it with the president's foreign travels.
He claimed that Tinubu had spent more than 260 days abroad without spending a night in the state. Obi promised that his administration would maintain closer contact with communities across the country, particularly by visiting them to understand their concerns.
Plans for Niger Delta Port Development
On regional economic development, Obi proposed upgrading existing ports in Warri, Port Harcourt and Calabar. He also pledged to begin construction of the long-delayed Ibaka Seaport in Akwa Ibom State and establish a new port in Bayelsa.
According to him, the proposed projects would improve commercial activities, strengthen maritime infrastructure and serve riverine communities across the Niger Delta.
Obi also highlighted national security, the fight against corruption, healthcare and education as key priorities in his proposed governance approach, describing investment in human capital as essential to reducing poverty.
Traditional Celebrations in Toru-Orua
The visit continued in Senator Dickson's hometown of Toru-Orua, in Sagbama Local Government Area, where Obi joined the celebrations marking the senator's homecoming.
The delegation participated in cultural activities, including a traditional canoe war game and boat regatta. Obi congratulated Dickson and commended the party's national and state leadership, members and residents for organising the event and giving the delegation a warm reception.
