One Killed, Four Wounded in Suspected Terrorist Shooting Near Paris

One person has been killed and four others wounded in a series of shootings in suburbs southwest of Paris, France, with authorities treating the incident as a suspected terrorist attack.

The shootings occurred on Friday in Trappes and nearby La Verrière, in the Yvelines department. Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh said a gunman allegedly fired randomly from a vehicle at people in several locations, including a petrol station, a medical centre and a playground. A 12-year-old girl was reportedly among the wounded.

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu confirmed that the suspect had been apprehended and placed in police custody.

Anti-Terrorism Prosecutors Take Over

France's National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor's Office (PNAT) has taken charge of the investigation, citing suspected murder connected to a terrorist enterprise.

The inquiry also covers alleged possession of a Category A weapon and conspiracy with a terrorist group to prepare crimes against people. Prosecutors are examining whether the attack involved targeting victims because of their actual or perceived race, ethnicity, nationality or religion.

Authorities have urged caution over speculation about the victims' identities and the attacker's possible motive, which remains unclear.

Suspect Known to Police

Local media reports identified the suspect as a 39-year-old man who was known to police but not to France's intelligence services. Reports said he used an older semi-automatic firearm during the shootings.

Trappes Mayor Rabeh described the incident as an attempt to cause widespread casualties, while Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said it appeared to be a murderous rampage. The suspect was reportedly arrested in the nearby area after the shootings.

Macron Sends Condolences

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed sympathy for the victims, their families and residents of Yvelines, saying the nation stood with them during the difficult period.

Police and emergency services responded to the affected locations as investigators continued to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack.
