ONE INJURED AS FIVE-STOREY BUILDING PARTIALLY COLLAPSES IN ABUJA

One worker sustained minor injuries after a five-storey building under construction partially collapsed on Durban Street, Wuse II, Abuja, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed.

The incident occurred on Saturday, October 17, 2026, with NEMA saying its Abuja Operations Office received an alert at about 6:30 p.m. Emergency response agencies were subsequently mobilised to the scene.

Emergency Teams Respond

In a statement issued by its Press Unit, NEMA said the FCT Fire Service was among the agencies involved in the response. Its AYA Emergency Response Ambulance Bay team was also deployed to coordinate search and rescue operations.

The agency confirmed that no lives were lost. The injured worker was evacuated to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

Series of Building Collapses Raise Concerns

The latest incident comes amid a series of building collapses reported in the Federal Capital Territory in recent months.

In September, a three-storey building collapsed in Wuse Zone 4, hours after officials of the FCT Administration’s Department of Development Control reportedly sealed the property and directed occupants to leave. Police said preliminary investigations indicated that the building had previously been marked and sealed.

In August, two residents were rescued after part of a one-storey residential building containing six blocks of flats collapsed in Kubwa 2/2. They were taken to Kubwa General Hospital in stable condition.

Earlier in May, a three-storey building under construction collapsed in Durumi 3, near Gudu Market, killing five people. Fifteen people were pulled from the rubble, including nine who were rescued alive.

FCT Minister Orders Investigation

Following the May collapse, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike ordered a full-scale investigation and warned developers to comply with building regulations and allow government officials to inspect construction sites.

The latest collapse has renewed attention on construction safety and the enforcement of building standards in Abuja. Further details about the cause of Saturday’s incident have not been provided by NEMA.
