The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called on the Federal Government and security agencies to take urgent action to end attacks, intimidation and harassment of journalists across the country.
The union made the call in a statement issued by its President, Alhassan Yahya, to mark the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, observed on November 2.
NUJ Raises Concerns Over Threats to Journalists
Yahya expressed concern over persistent cases of intimidation, arbitrary arrests, physical assaults, cyberbullying and other forms of violence against journalists carrying out their professional duties.
He warned that failure to prosecute individuals responsible for such attacks threatens press freedom, weakens the rule of law and undermines democratic governance.
The NUJ urged security agencies to respect the constitutional responsibilities of journalists and recognise the media as partners in promoting accountability and democracy.
Union Seeks Stronger Protection Measures
The union also called on government institutions, media organisations, civil society groups and international partners to work together to establish effective safety mechanisms and emergency support systems for journalists.
It stressed that such measures were particularly important for media professionals working in high-risk areas.
Reaffirming its commitment to defending press freedom, the NUJ insisted that journalists should not have to risk their safety, freedom or lives to report the truth.
