Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has urged the Ekiti State Police Command to arrest and prosecute those responsible for the attack on the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, in Ado-Ekiti last week.
In a statement, Falana said the attackers were known and should be brought before a Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti without further delay. He also called for stronger action against political thuggery and unlawful killings in the state.
Falana Recalls Previous Political Violence
Falana recalled the killings of Dr Ayo Daramola, Tunde Omojola and Kehinde Fasuba, allegedly carried out by a notorious killer squad in Ekiti State over political differences. He said the group also threatened other prominent indigenes.
According to him, although suspects were arrested and charged with murder before the Ekiti State High Court, the case was allegedly compromised by powerful political interests, contributing to the persistence of violence.
Lawyer Calls for Action in Fatal Land Dispute Case
The human rights lawyer also cited the September 14, 2026, incident involving former Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria chairman, Joseph Rotimi Olabiowonu, popularly known as Metilo, and Opeyemi Adedoyin.
Falana alleged that the two men invaded the home of Sunday Ogunsakin in Afao-Ekiti over a land dispute, abducted and assaulted him, before pushing him out of a moving vehicle. Ogunsakin sustained severe head injuries and later died at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital.
He said the suspects were arrested by the police and arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti. The court reportedly ordered their remand in a correctional facility pending legal advice from the Attorney-General.
Falana Commends State Government, Demands Prosecution
Falana commended the Ekiti State Government for distancing itself from the attack on Sowore and calling for a thorough investigation.
However, he urged the state Ministry of Justice to take over the case involving Olabiowonu and Adedoyin and prosecute them before the High Court on charges of abduction, torture and murder.
He maintained that those responsible for political violence and other serious crimes must be held accountable through the justice system.
