NIGERIAN FIRST: FG Directs MDAs to Buy Vehicles from Local Assemblers

The Federal Government has directed all ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) to purchase vehicles exclusively from licensed local assemblers or their authorised retailers under the Nigeria First Policy.

Speaking in Abuja, National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) Director-General Oluwemimo Joseph Osanipin said Nigeria’s vehicle assembly plants have an annual production capacity of 370,520 vehicles. He said prioritising local manufacturers in government procurement would create jobs, reduce vehicle imports and encourage domestic production of vehicle components.

Under the directive, agencies seeking to purchase foreign-assembled vehicles must demonstrate that no suitable local alternative exists and obtain presidential approval. Government-procured vehicles must also carry traceable Vehicle Identification Numbers verified through the NADDC.

The Bureau of Public Procurement warned that poor vehicle quality, inadequate after-sales support and violations of the policy could attract sanctions. Manufacturers have also been urged to invest in technology, quality control and maintenance services to strengthen Nigeria’s automotive industry.

As local businesses expand their production and services, effective communication will be essential for reaching customers and building brand awareness. VYPA helps businesses improve visibility through digital signage and advertising opportunities.
