Nigeria: Parties Challenge INEC Over Missing 2027 Election Candidates

Several political parties and governorship candidates have challenged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the omission of their names from its final lists for the 2027 elections.

The affected parties include the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Social Democratic Party (SDP) and African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Among those affected are the PDP’s governorship candidates in Oyo and Gombe, the ADC candidate in Cross River and the SDP candidate in Benue. The NDC also reported that its Kano governorship candidate, Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, and his running mate were missing from the list.

Some affected candidates described the omissions as administrative errors, while their parties said they were engaging INEC to resolve the issues. The NDC also vowed to pursue available legal options to ensure its candidates’ names were restored.

INEC’s final lists cover governorship elections in 28 states and State House of Assembly elections across the 36 states, scheduled for February 6, 2027.

As preparations for the elections continue, the affected parties are seeking clarification and a resolution in line with electoral laws.
