Nigeria: FG’s 30-Day Petrol Discount Faces Opposition Backlash

The Federal Government’s plan to offer discounted petrol for 30 days has drawn criticism from opposition figures and political groups, who argue that the temporary measure does not adequately address Nigeria’s rising cost of living.

The government announced that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) would temporarily forgo its retail profit margin and sell petrol at a discounted price, with priority given to public transport operators. Officials said the move was intended to cushion households against global crude oil price shocks and stressed that it did not represent a return to the fuel subsidy regime.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar described the intervention as a publicity stunt, questioning what would happen when the 30-day period ends. The Obidient Movement, the Nigeria Democratic Congress and the presidential campaign organisation of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde also criticised the plan, raising concerns about its timing, reach and long-term impact.

Some energy experts have welcomed the temporary relief, while others have questioned whether the arrangement could amount to another form of subsidy without clear accountability. The debate continues as Nigerians seek lasting solutions to high fuel prices, transport costs and the broader cost-of-living crisis.
