NCDC Identifies Two Suspected Ebola Cases in North-East Nigeria

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has identified two suspected cases of Ebola disease in the North-East region, with both individuals already isolated as investigations continue.

The agency disclosed this in a statement shared on its official X account on Saturday, October 31, 2026, adding that contact identification and listing were ongoing while laboratory tests were being conducted.

Laboratory Tests Awaited

The NCDC stressed that the two individuals have not been confirmed to have Ebola, explaining that their classification as suspected cases does not establish an infection.

According to the agency, confirmation will depend on laboratory results. It urged Nigerians to maintain proper hand hygiene, practise good sanitation and follow public health guidance while investigations continue.

The agency also promised to provide further updates as verified information becomes available.

The latest development comes days after the NCDC reported identifying an additional contact linked to Nigeria's confirmed Ebola case, an e-hailing driver. This brought the number of primary contacts being monitored to 54, while efforts continued to identify secondary contacts.

On October 26, NCDC Director-General, Dr Jide Idris, told Channels Television that contact tracing was still ongoing and warned that the country could not consider the response complete until all contacts had been identified and monitored.

The Federal Government announced Nigeria's first confirmed case of the Bundibugyo strain on October 20, 2026. The patient was identified as a woman who returned from Uganda with symptoms on October 7, following recent travel to the East African country.

The index patient was subsequently flown to Switzerland alongside her husband. The development has heightened the importance of surveillance, contact tracing and public health monitoring as authorities work to prevent further transmission.
