JD Vance Blames Iran War for Republicans’ Poor Performance in US Midterm Elections

United States Vice President JD Vance has blamed the Iran war for the Republican Party’s poor performance in the 2026 midterm elections, saying many supporters of President Donald Trump switched allegiance to Democrats because of dissatisfaction with the conflict.

Vance made the remarks in a post on X on Wednesday, arguing that the party’s setback was not mainly caused by low voter turnout but by voters who supported the Trump-Vance ticket in 2024 and backed Democratic candidates in 2026.

Vance Says Former Republican Supporters Switched Sides

According to the Vice President, data analysis conducted by his team before the elections showed that Republican supporters were turning out in significant numbers, despite opinion polls predicting a strong Democratic performance.

He explained that his analysts had focused on the composition of the electorate and whether it was similar enough to the 2024 voting population to give Republicans an advantage.

Vance said turnout figures in several states were encouraging, citing Florida, where he claimed the electorate was nine points more Republican than Democratic, only slightly below the 2024 figures.

However, he said a member of his data team had warned that many Republican voters were angry and might not support the party at the polls.

“The main problem is not turnout. The main problem is that many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026,” he said.

Iran War, Inflation Among Voters’ Concerns

Vance acknowledged that Republicans might have failed to communicate their economic policies effectively, particularly on the cost of living and inflation.

However, he identified the Iran war, economic hardship, America's foreign policy priorities and its relationship with Israel as major issues behind the loss of support.

He said a pollster who accurately predicted the election outcome identified four key demands among former Republican supporters who switched to Democrats: ending the war, prioritising the cost of living and inflation, putting America first and changing the country's relationship with Israel.

“The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night,” Vance stated.

He also defended television personality Rachel Campos-Duffy, saying her earlier call for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict had proved politically sound.

Vance Rejects Calls for Immigration Amnesty

The Vice President warned Republican establishment figures against blaming the electoral setback on other issues, particularly immigration policy.

While expressing openness to reviewing immigration enforcement strategies, including targeting businesses that employ undocumented workers, he rejected proposals for amnesty.

“Anyone pushing amnesty is lying to you,” he said.

Vance also challenged those who believed the war was worth its political consequences to defend that position openly, noting that the Republican defeat could cost the party control of the Senate for the next six years.

Despite the setback, he urged disappointed Republican supporters to channel their anger into rebuilding the party and electing candidates who share their political views.

“Let’s take that anger and get back to the work of saving our country,” he added.
