FIFA president Gianni Infantino has dismissed calls for his resignation, insisting that he enjoys widespread support across world football as he seeks another term leading the sport’s governing body.
Infantino made the remarks amid criticism of his leadership following the withdrawal of a proposal to attract private investment into a new entity managing commercial rights linked to major football competitions, including the World Cup.
Infantino Defends FIFA’s Leadership
The FIFA president said the organisation’s democratic process requires respecting the views of its 211 member associations, which will ultimately determine who leads the body.
Controversial Investment Proposal
The proposed commercial investment plan triggered opposition from several football officials, with critics questioning how it was developed and its potential implications for FIFA’s governance.
Infantino subsequently apologised to FIFA’s governing council over mistakes in how the proposal was handled. However, some European football officials remained dissatisfied with the explanations provided.
Support for Another Term
Infantino’s prospects received a boost after the Asian Football Confederation endorsed his bid for another term, following support from African football associations.
He is seeking re-election in March 2027, which would keep him in office through 2031 if successful. The election comes amid continuing debate over FIFA’s leadership, transparency and decision-making.
Despite the criticism, Infantino maintains that FIFA’s member associations should decide the organisation’s leadership through its established electoral process.
