FG Urges Universities to Embrace AI

Federal Government has Urged Nigerian Universities to Embrace AI and Improve Standards

The Federal Government has urged Nigerian universities to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies while improving regulatory compliance, accountability and academic standards.

The Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Ahmad, made the call on Tuesday at the 2026 retreat of the National Universities Commission (NUC) and vice-chancellors in Abuja.

Ahmad said developments in AI, digital learning, data analytics and research were transforming higher education worldwide. She stressed that Nigerian universities must adapt to these changes while establishing safeguards for academic integrity, data protection, ethics and responsible AI use.

The minister also called on university leaders to promote transparency in financial management, recruitment, admissions, examinations and procurement. She noted that universities must become centres of research, innovation and national development rather than institutions focused solely on awarding degrees.

NUC Executive Secretary Professor Abdullahi Ribadu disclosed that the commission was developing a National AI Roadmap and Policy Framework for Nigerian universities. He also highlighted ongoing digital reforms, including the e-NUC platform, designed to automate the commission’s operations.

Other initiatives include plans for post-accreditation monitoring, improved admission oversight and stronger collaboration between universities, industries and research institutions.

Ribadu acknowledged that inadequate funding remained a major challenge, urging universities to explore partnerships with the private sector, alumni associations and development organisations.

The retreat, held from October 13 to 14, is expected to produce practical recommendations for improving governance, leadership, regulatory compliance and the overall quality of university education in Nigeria.
