Elon Musk Considers Merging Tesla and SpaceX in Historic Deal

Elon Musk is considering merging Tesla and SpaceX in a potential deal that could create one of the world’s largest technology companies, combining electric vehicles, rockets, artificial intelligence and satellite communications.

Musk confirmed on Tuesday that special committees had been formed to assess the proposal. However, he stressed that no agreement had been reached and a merger was not guaranteed.

Tesla is valued at approximately $1.5 trillion, while SpaceX is valued at around $2 trillion. A combination would represent an unprecedented corporate merger, subject to shareholder approval.

Combining AI, Robotics and Space Technology

The proposed merger could bring Tesla’s electric vehicles, robotics and self-driving technology together with SpaceX’s rockets, satellites, telecommunications and data centre operations.

Analysts say combining the companies could strengthen their technological capabilities and support Musk’s long-term ambitions, including his vision of establishing a self-sustaining city on Mars.

However, Tesla shareholders would need to approve the deal, and analysts have raised questions about how the combined business would be valued and how much influence existing shareholders would retain.

What It Could Mean for Tesla Customers

Experts do not expect immediate major changes for Tesla drivers if the merger proceeds. However, combining the companies’ artificial intelligence, robotics and satellite technologies could influence future vehicle development.

Tesla is also expanding its focus on humanoid robots while facing growing competition in the electric vehicle market, particularly from Chinese manufacturers such as BYD.

Analysts say the proposal raises questions about whether electric vehicles would remain a priority within a larger business increasingly focused on AI and space infrastructure.

Shareholder Approval and Regulatory Scrutiny

The merger could strengthen Musk’s voting influence over the combined company, although the proposal would face scrutiny from shareholders and potentially regulators.

Financial analysts have also warned that Tesla investors could end up owning a smaller proportion of a much larger and more complex business.

Following reports about the potential deal, SpaceX shares rose 8 per cent in after-hours trading, while Tesla shares gained 2 per cent.

While the proposal remains under consideration, the potential merger reflects Musk’s broader strategy of bringing his technology ventures closer together.
