Dogo Gide Emerges as Major Obstacle to Islamic State Expansion in North-West Nigeria

Notorious bandit leader Dogo Gide has reportedly become a major obstacle to the expansion of the Islamic State Sahel Province (ISSP) in Nigeria’s North-West, inflicting losses on the extremist group and forcing some of its fighters to retreat.

Security analyst Brant Philip disclosed this in a post on X on Wednesday while analysing ISSP’s efforts to establish alliances with armed bandit groups across the region.

ISSP’s Attempts to Recruit Bandit Groups

According to Philip, ISSP has repeatedly approached bandit groups in Sokoto, Zamfara and Niger states over the past two years, seeking to persuade them to surrender, repent and join its extremist campaign.

He said some groups in Zamfara and Sokoto accepted the overtures and were absorbed into ISSP, while others resisted the group's advances.

Philip also claimed that ISSP fighters defeated several bandit groups in northern Zamfara, taking control of their camps, weapons and vehicles.

Dogo Gide’s Resistance

However, the analyst identified Dogo Gide as a significant obstacle to the group's expansion around mid-2026.

Philip described Gide as a prominent warlord who has maintained opportunistic relationships with jihadist groups at different times. He also credited him with pushing Sadiku’s JAS faction out of its strongholds in Niger State towards the western part of the region.

In his assessment, Gide’s resistance presented ISSP with a challenge beyond those posed by rival jihadist groups and security forces.

The analyst's account highlights the shifting relationships and rivalries among armed groups operating in Nigeria’s North-West, where attempts to recruit or absorb local bandit factions have reportedly met varying levels of resistance.
