Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has arrived in Kigali, Rwanda, for a working visit aimed at strengthening military cooperation between Nigeria and Rwanda and improving joint responses to security threats across Africa.
The visit, scheduled for October 18 to 23, 2026, is at the invitation of the Rwanda Defence Force Army Chief of Staff, Major General Vincent Nyakarundi. Shaibu was received on arrival by Nyakarundi and Nigeria’s Acting High Commissioner to Rwanda, Ambassador Ibrahim Zanna.
Focus on Counterterrorism and Regional Security
According to a statement published by the Nigerian Army on X, the engagement will allow both armies to share operational experiences, deepen defence collaboration and explore joint strategies to address counterterrorism and emerging security challenges.
The Army said the visit reflects Shaibu’s commitment to strengthening African military partnerships, developing institutional capacity and promoting collective security in line with the Nigerian Army’s transformation agenda.
Discussions are expected to focus on professional exchanges and practical ways both forces can collaborate against common security threats across the continent. Further details of the engagements are expected in the coming days.
