Michael Carrick's future as Manchester United manager is under fresh pressure after his side suffered a 2-0 Premier League defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 31, 2026.
The result extended United's winless run to nine matches, leaving the 20-time English champions just one point above the relegation zone and at risk of dropping into the bottom three before the weekend ends.
Rogers Gives Chelsea the Lead
United created several opportunities in the first half but failed to convert them. Captain Bruno Fernandes missed a promising chance from Bryan Mbeumo's cross, while Mbeumo and Amad Diallo also came close to scoring.
Matheus Cunha briefly appeared to have put United ahead after turning in Harry Maguire's header from a corner, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Chelsea took the lead five minutes into the second half when Morgan Rogers drove through the middle of United's defence before lifting the ball over goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
Martinez Sent Off as Palmer Scores
United's hopes of recovering suffered another setback when defender Lisandro Martinez was sent off after receiving two yellow cards in quick succession.
Martinez was first booked for pulling back Rogers before a subsequent challenge on Wesley Fofana led to a VAR review. Referee Peter Bankes awarded Chelsea a penalty and showed the Argentine defender a second yellow card.
Cole Palmer converted the spot-kick despite Lammens getting a hand to the ball, doubling Chelsea's advantage and sealing the victory.
Chelsea later had a third goal from Estevao ruled out for offside, but the hosts comfortably managed the closing stages.
Carrick Faces Another Major Test
Carrick had been under scrutiny following United's 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth the previous weekend, but was retained for the Chelsea fixture.
The former United midfielder recalled Fernandes after dropping him for the Bournemouth match, following the captain's criticism of his tactics after a 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League.
With United struggling in both domestic and European competitions, the club's hierarchy now faces another major decision over Carrick's future ahead of Tuesday's Champions League meeting with Roma at Old Trafford.
A further defeat could deepen the club's sporting and financial concerns, with United having lost two of their three European matches so far.
