Carney Urges Albertans to Keep Province in Canada Ahead of Referendum

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has urged Albertans to vote in favour of remaining in Canada ahead of a referendum scheduled for Monday, warning that the stakes are high for the province and the country.

Speaking at a pro-Canada rally in Calgary, Carney described the vote as coming at a difficult time and called on residents to deliver a decisive result against separation. He also cautioned supporters not to assume the outcome was already settled, stressing that voter turnout would be important.

More than 450,000 Albertans had reportedly voted early or by mail ahead of the referendum. The ballot asks whether the province should remain in Canada or begin the process of holding a future binding referendum on separation.

The vote comes amid long-running tensions between Alberta and the federal government over issues including energy policy, economic priorities and provincial autonomy. Supporters of separation say the province needs greater control over its future, while opponents warn that leaving Canada could bring years of uncertainty and lost opportunities.

Carney’s campaign is part of a wider effort by federalist groups and political leaders to persuade Albertans that their concerns can be addressed without breaking away from Canada.
