Can Zimbabwe’s ZiG Replace the US Dollar? Public Trust Remains a Major Hurdle

Zimbabwe is renewing efforts to make its local currency, the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG), more widely used as the government seeks to reduce the economy’s dependence on the US dollar. However, rebuilding public trust remains one of the biggest challenges facing the initiative.

Introduced in April 2024, the ZiG is backed by foreign currency and precious-metal reserves, including gold, according to the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe. The central bank has also introduced updated banknotes and measures intended to encourage the currency’s use in domestic transactions.

Despite these efforts, many Zimbabweans remain cautious after previous currency collapses wiped out savings and reduced the value of earnings. Some workers exchange their ZiG quickly, while businesses report that customers continue to prefer paying in US dollars.

Economists say wider adoption will depend on sustained economic stability and confidence that the currency can preserve its value. Zimbabwe’s central bank is now pursuing a gradual transition towards greater use of the ZiG rather than relying solely on a fixed deadline for replacing the dollar.

The challenge is not simply getting people to spend the local currency, but convincing them that it is safe to save in it. Without lasting confidence among households and businesses, replacing the US dollar will remain difficult.
