The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), Edo State Command, has announced the escape of a 28-year-old awaiting-trial inmate, Osita Thomas, from custody during a court appearance.
The incident was disclosed in a statement dated October 21 and issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Aminu Suleman. According to the statement, Thomas escaped while appearing in court over allegations of conspiracy and stealing.
Public Urged to Assist in Recapture
The command appealed to members of the public to provide useful information that could help security agencies locate and recapture the fugitive.
Anyone with information about his whereabouts was advised to contact the nearest custodial centre or police station, or call 08038075882 or 08039243704.
The Controller of Corrections in Edo State assured the public that efforts were being made to recapture Thomas, adding that security measures for inmates in custody had been strengthened.
Manpower Shortage Raised
An official of the correctional service, who spoke on the incident, attributed the escape partly to inadequate manpower. The official explained that the warden escorting Thomas and other inmates could not pursue him without risking the escape of others in custody.
The official also raised concerns about staffing levels, claiming that more than 1,000 personnel were expected to retire in 2026, with no plans for new recruitment. The official called for urgent action to address the shortage and prevent similar incidents.
