At least seven people have reportedly died and dozens were injured following an explosion and fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta, Canada, according to multiple military sources cited by Global News.
The explosion occurred around 4 p.m. Mountain Time on Saturday, October 17, during a live-fire training exercise. Military sources said the exercise may have struck a gas line or gas well, triggering a fire that spread beyond the training area amid strong winds.
Emergency Teams Respond
Military and civilian emergency services rushed to the scene, while ambulances transported injured personnel for treatment. Several Alberta hospitals declared a Code Orange to prepare for the influx of casualties.
Canada’s Defence Minister, David McGuinty, described the incident as a serious and delicate situation. The Canadian Armed Forces confirmed fatalities and injuries but said the full impact was still being assessed and casualty details would be withheld until families were notified.
Fire Spreads Beyond the Base
Winds reaching up to 100 kilometres per hour fuelled the fire, which spread beyond the military base into the surrounding municipality. Firefighters from several jurisdictions responded, and officials later reported that the wildfire was being held while a fire watch remained in place.
The incident also disrupted advance voting for Alberta’s referendum, forcing the Wainwright Communiplex polling station to close early. Voters were redirected to alternative locations.
Leaders Express Support
Prime Minister Mark Carney, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre expressed concern for those affected and acknowledged the efforts of emergency responders.
CFB Wainwright is a major Canadian military training facility used to prepare soldiers and military units for operational duties. Authorities say investigations and assessments are ongoing, with further details expected as the situation develops.
