The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has defended President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, describing them as necessary steps to address Nigeria’s longstanding economic challenges, with some results beginning to emerge despite the hardship experienced by citizens.
The minister spoke on Tuesday at a press conference in Abuja ahead of the unveiling of a book on Tinubu’s reform agenda, promoted by the PBAT Door-to-Door Movement.
Minister Defends Economic Decisions
Sulaiman-Ibrahim said Tinubu inherited serious structural problems in the economy, revenue collection and public finances when he assumed office on May 29, 2023. She said the removal of petrol subsidies and changes to the tax system were difficult but necessary decisions to address longstanding economic weaknesses rather than leave the burden to future generations. Acknowledging the sacrifices Nigerians have faced, the minister said the government did not take the hardship lightly. She pointed to improvements in external reserves, easing inflationary pressures and renewed investor confidence as signs of progress.Education And Tax Policies Highlighted
The minister identified the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, new tax laws and financial autonomy for local governments as policies intended to extend the benefits of reform to ordinary Nigerians. She said the tax laws were designed to protect low-income earners and small businesses, while local government autonomy could bring resources closer to communities. On rising public debt, Sulaiman-Ibrahim argued that borrowing should be assessed based on the economic value of the projects it finances, stressing the need for responsible debt management.Government Addresses Out-Of-School Children
Responding to reports that the number of out-of-school children had increased from 14 million to 20 million, the minister acknowledged the seriousness of the challenge. She said the government was pursuing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education, technical and vocational training, early childhood education and skills acquisition through a coordinated approach. Sulaiman-Ibrahim also noted that the benefits of reforms might take time to reach citizens because implementation depends on funding, administrative adjustments and coordination among institutions. President Tinubu is expected to attend the book unveiling as Special Guest of Honour. Aliko Dangote is listed as Chief Launcher, Abdul Samad Rabiu as Co-Chief Launcher, and High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, as Chief Host.Punch Newspapers
