2026 CAF Awards: Super Falcons Players Miss Out on Women’s Player of the Year Shortlist

2026 CAF Awards: Super Falcons Players Miss Out on Women’s Player of the Year Shortlist

Nigeria’s Super Falcons players have been left out of the nominees for the 2026 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Women’s Player of the Year award.

CAF unveiled its shortlist for the various award categories on Tuesday, with no Nigerian player making the final nominations in the women’s category.

Super Falcons’ Omission Follows WAFCON Quarter-Final Exit

The omission comes after Nigeria’s disappointing campaign at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where the Super Falcons suffered a quarter-final defeat to eventual champions Cameroon.

The absence of Nigerian players is notable given the country’s history of success in the award category. Former Super Falcons stars Perpetua Nkwocha and Asisat Oshoala have both won the prestigious honour multiple times.

Cameroon Leads the Nominations

Cameroon has the highest number of nominees, with three players making the shortlist: Marie Ngah Manga, Michaely Bihina and Monique Ngock.

Algeria is represented by Marine Dafeur, while Portia Boakye is Ghana’s sole nominee.

Malawi has two representatives, sisters Tabitha Chawinga and Temwa Chawinga. Morocco’s Hanane Ait El Haj, South Africa’s Thembi Kgatlana and Zambia’s Barbara Banda complete the list.

The nominees represent seven African countries, with Nigeria notably absent from the final shortlist.
